What is an ABS Wheel Speed Sensor?

Wheel speed sensors, or ABS (anti-lock braking system) sensors, are a required safety feature on all modern passenger cars and trucks. They monitor and send information about a vehicle’s wheel speeds to the ABS Control Module, keeping the vehicle from skidding or sliding out of control when braking aggressively.

When one or more of the wheel speed sensors are not functioning properly, the vehicle’s ABS will be disabled. In an emergency braking situation, or on slippery road conditions, this could cause the vehicle to skid dangerously. If you notice a vehicle sliding, or notice the ABS or Traction Control warning lights on, there is a chance you have a malfunctioning ABS wheel speed sensor. Occasionally these sensors become dirty and can simply be cleaned, other times you will need to replace them.
