When Does a Timing Belt Need to be Replaced?

As is the case with any rubber belt, the timing belt will begin to wear down over time. For this reason, it is a normal part of vehicle maintenance that needs to be replaced at regular intervals. The general rule for modern cars and trucks is every 100,000 - 150,000 km, however it is important to refer to the vehicle’s manual for a proper maintenance schedule.

What is a Timing Belt?

The timing belt is a rubber belt that keeps the camshaft moving in sync with the crankshaft. It is a critical engine component, as it ensures the valves, pistons, and other moving parts are all operating with proper timing.

For many vehicles, the timing belt is available in a Timing Belt Kit that includes all the components needed to replace the timing system. This normally includes the timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump, and other components, depending on the make and model. It is strongly recommended that these parts be replaced together, since a failure of any of them will almost certainly cause major damage to your vehicle’s engine, leading to very costly repairs.
