What is a Serpentine Belt?
The serpentine belt, often referred to as the drive belt, provides power from the crankshaft pulley to multiple peripheral devices, most commonly the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor. In some vehicles it may also provide power to the water pump.
While the engine is running, the belt is operating continuously. Because of high temperatures in the engine, and the constant friction of being in use, the belt can wear down or crack over time.
Because the serpentine belt provides power to so many engine accessories, it is a critical engine component. A broken belt can leave a driver stranded on the side of the road with a vehicle that no longer runs, so it is important to have the belt inspected regularly for damage or wear.
It is generally recommended to replace the serpentine belt every 100,000 - 150,000 km, however you should always consult the vehicle’s manual for a complete maintenance schedule.
